Abstract
Made Plasidus, 2024. An analysis of the characteristics of the narrative writing made by the second grade students of English Study Program of Timor University in the 2022/2023 academic year. Supervised by Drs. Anselmus Sahan, M.Pd and Hesni Neno, S.Pd, M.Pd. The aims to point out the level of ability of the second-grade students of English Study Program of Timor University in narrative writing, pinpoint characteristics of narrative texts in the students’ narrative writing and judge the characteristics of the students’ narrative texts. After analyzing the data, the researcher can reveal that their level of mastery is categorized excellent because the total number of students’ answers is 1,475, then divided with the total of the students, that is, 18 students. It is got 82. Their average score is 82 indicating that they have passed the writing test given. In addition, 15 students’ scores are categorized excellent while 3 students’ scores are good. Then, the characteristics of their narrative texts cover five characteristics, namely plot, characters, setting, structure and theme. They developed the forward plot, applied human being and nonhuman characters, took place in a certain day, time and places and/or seasons, their structures are introduction, content (or body of stories) and ending, and their themes are full of moral teachings. Using contrastive perspective exposes that their texts contained abounding conflicts (usually between person versus person or person versus personified nature) and actions, symbolic and flat characters, place and time settings, developed similar plot and applied animal characters to address moral teaching, and expanded the good and less will. Therefore, teaching and learning process of literature and writing subjects in the English Study Program and the next researchers as well as should force the students to write their own tradition stories and different types of writing that can train and develop their writing ability.
