Abstract

BRIA, GAUDENSIANA, BETE. 2023.Thesis. “Improving The Second Grade Students’ Vocabulary by Using Short Story in SMP Satap Negeri Nian in The School Year 2022/2023”. English Study Program, Timor University. Main advisor Drs. Edmundus Bouk, M.Pd. Associate advisor Yanuarius Seran, S.Pd.,M.Sc. The research was conducted due to students’ low ability in mastering English vocabulary. This research aimed at improving the second grade students’ vocabulary by using short story in SMP Satap Negeri Nian. This research used classroom action research. It was done in one cycle, which consisted of three meetings. The researcher did the research based on the procedures of classroom action research which are planning, action, observation, and reflection. The data was obtained from tests. It was found that using short story on the test cycle 1 showed a slow increase in the students’ ability to master English vocabulary. In the test cycle 2, some improvements were made during the learning process. In this second cycle, English vocabulary at second grade students’ increase with using short story. The test cycle 2 showed that the mastery of English vocabulary tended to increase. From both test of every cycle, it indicates that by using short story can improve the second grade students’ vocabulary in SMP Satap Negeri Nian. Keywords: Improving, Vocabulary, Short Story
