Abstract

Klau,Stef. 2021.Thesis entitled “THE USE OF PICTURES TO IMPROVE STUDENTS WRITING ABILITY OF DESCRIPTIVE TEXT OF THE EIGTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP N SATU ATAP ANKIKO IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2020/2021”. Supervisors: (1) Febronia Lasi, S.Pd., M. Ed and (2)Associate Advisor: Benyamin K. Abi. SS., M.Pd. This thesis aims to find out the level of understanding of eight grade students at SMP N Satu Atap Ankiko regarding descriptive text and to find out the students at SMP N Satu Atap Ankiko able to write descriptive text using picture.To collect the necessary data, the writer took 29 students of the second grade students of SMP N SATAP ANKIKO as sample. The writer gave a test to determine the ability to write descriptive text essay using pictures. The test questions were be in the form of 3 pictures, then students were asked to choose one image to analyze and write a descriptive text essay according to the picture. After students work on the questions given, the writer collected their writings again, then the writer checked the answers. The method used in this study was a quantitative descriptive method. To analyze the data, from the calculation above, it showed that the score of 81.03% of the 29 eighth grade students of SMP N SATAP ANKIKO in writing descriptive text using pictures. Among these 29 students 21 students got scores between 80-100 (82.52%) ) and 8 students scored 70-79 (77.12%). Individually, the level of students' understanding in writing descriptive text using pictures is very good. The findings show that the students' abilities were at a very good level. There were possible solutions to overcome students' difficulties in writing descriptive text using pictures such as: students must know what descriptive text is about and how to write descriptive text using pictures is one of the students' media to improve their knowledge of English material.
