Abstract

Speaking is one of the productive ability. In the nature of communication, we can find the speaker, the listener, the message and the feedback. Speaking is one of the language ability that must be taught both a junior and senior high school based on the ministry of national education’s policy. Storytelling technique is a technique that help students’ Speaking ability in terms of enriching vocabularies, developing creativities, and developing pronunciations. This research is aimed to answer the questions whether storytelling technique develop the students’ ability in speaking, and also to know students’ responses after learning speaking through storytelling technique. Therefore, this thesis entitled “Developing Students’ Speaking Ability through Storytelling Technique at the Second Grade of SMAS Katolik Warta Bakti Kefamenanu”. To get the data, the researcher conducted field research at SMAS Katolik Warta Bakti Kefamenanu by applying two techniques, namely: test, and questionnaire. The result of the research was used the pre-test and post-test was analyzed by using statistic formula. According to the results of the research, applying Storytelling technique in teaching speaking could develop student’s ability. It was proven by the development of the average score which was shown higher (61, 25 to 83, 75). Furthermore, based on the analysis of questionnaires, most of the students gave positive response to storytelling technique. Finally, it could be concluded that storytelling technique can developed the students’ ability in speaking. Key words: Storytelling technique, Developing and Speaking
